Bathroom Make Over In Progress...

While I was stuck at home dealing with my kidney stone I did get a few things accomplished. Couldn't go to the beach because a 4 hour drive was just too far from my doctor and besides if the stone decided to "show out" again I knew all of my screaming and begging for death would disturb my close- in condo neighbors.

Mr. Vintagesouthern and I  had discussed redoing his bath so now was as good a time as any.  The first thing I, he did was remove the hollywood light strip and ugly wallpaper.(I was in pain, remember.)
Then, he we painted it a creamy taupe. The color is Cafe Latte (Kiltz Brand)  and the finish is eggshell.

I decided to ride to Asheville, NC to check out their Hospice Barn. It always has the neatest things and the money goes to a good cause.

Did I ever get lucky. A lighting company had donated boxes of discontinued light fixtures. These were just $15 each. I scooped up 3 for his bath and 3 of a different style for the master bath. (That's a job for the future.)

I know she's  brass but I had plans!

Next thing was to sand it lightly, apply a coat of primer, and two coats of Rustoleum.
Finally, measure, measure and measure again to get her even over the mirror and finished!!

So..... what do you think?     The next thing on the list is to frame the mirror. Any ideas?  I'm not sure what color to go with.

Thanks for dropping by and y'all come back again real soon.

How I'm spending my summer vacation...

When I was teaching I always had the students write about how they spent their summer vacation. I know you, as well as me, when I was the student, was sick to death of writing about "summer vacation... but it always gave me great insight to their lives, their interests, and their exposure to the world.

If I were writing about my summer today,  I would surely include this little find - I would title it,
My Ten Minute Find!

On my way home from running errands I decided to stop by the Goodwill. I only had 10 mins max and thought it probably a waste of my time. As soon as I opened the door I spotted it straight ahead... towards the back. I made a bee line to it and could not believe it was only $12.

I had been looking for a small wooden table to go on the deck at the beach condo. I could picture it already in my mind... cleaned up and painted white (of course). All things were made to be painted white.

I took it home and cleaned it up and  sat it in the kitchen... its' new temporary home until I can take it to the beach.

Now I'm thinking I kinda like it there. It matches perfectly although the green 90's wallpaper is coming down this fall the new color will be taupe..... it's just too hot to tackle anything like that now. Oops! That's Skippers checked placemat for his water bowl on the side. His presence always seems to make its' way into my pictures!
Glad you could stop by. Come again often

Porch Makeover

Since Mr. VintageSouthern and I have been stuck at home and could not go to the beach condo because I needed to stay in close proximity to my doctor. I decided  we decided to get some things done that we had been procrastinating about doing.

First thing on the agenda was to restain the front door. I debated painting it black or red but decided to do the easiest thing and stain it back to its original color .I followed this up with a sealer. We live across the road from the river and there is always so much moisture in the air....it takes its toll.

A new wreath from one of my thrifting adventures for $2.00 and it looks like a new door.

Next on the agenda was to repaint the porch.  Sorry, I didn't think to make a before picture. I always forget. I am getting so forgetful I guess I need to strap a camera around my neck so I am prepared anytime....but I digress...

The porch was hunter green. It looked O.K. but  we,  I was ready for a change. The new paint color is from Lowes. The shade is Brick Red and  it is for concrete..It looks dark in the pictures but it is really red.  It is a little brighter than I wanted but I will have to live with it until this fall when the weather cools a little.   Did I mention it is blazing hot now in S.C?

The stripe fabric is Sunbrella. I made these a while back so I did not replace them. I wanted to tie the red floor  in with the greens and whites so I sewed up some floral pillows and a cover for the chaise. I still need to pick up some plants to finish it off......

but first.......... I need to get my book, a glass of sweet tea and occupy the chaise for a while. It was a retirement gift and one of my favorite things.                                                                                                                                        Have a great week-end everyone and stay cool!

Mirror mirror on the wall...

When I saw Cindy's window- mirror over at romantichome.blogspot it was love at first sight. I knew it was just what I needed to add some depth to my little beach condo. I immediately began the search. After searching Craigslist, Goodwill and most thrift shops between Myrtle Beach and Asheville N.C. I was ready to give up.

Finally, I found a mirror I thought would work at  Old Tyme Pottery. With a little help from  Mr. Vintaintagesouthern  we added wood to the center of the mirror to make panes, sanded off the finish, (it was a dark oak finish), and painted it white. Skipper had to pose for the photo opt :)

It still was not what I wanted so we searched and found an old window sill. Mr. VS added it to the bottom and it made a perfect shelf for my shells.

I found the shutters at Goodwill for ten dollars painted them white and things were looking up. All I needed now was some plates to add some color to the wall. A trip to Marshalls yielded just what I was looking for.   I am amazed at how much the mirror changed the looks of the room.  Thanks Cindy for the inspiration.

Be careful what you buy

These beautiful flowers were sent to me by my sweet and thoughtful friend Sandra.  They really cheered me up and  brightened my day.It has been a tough couple of weeks.   I am waiting to get a pesty old kidney stone broken up next week.  I think the proper term for the procedure  is lithoscopy..........................    anyway,

Mr. Vintagesouthernlife and I went thrifting several weeks ago.  I found a couple of treasures.......... this lovely vintage walking cane with a brass handle

and this bed serving tray.

I placed the cane in an umbrella stand at the front door and set about giving new life to the tray.

After scrubbing, sanding, and painting .... here she is.                           (Sorry about the quality of this picture. I couldn't get it any lighter.)

My plans were to use both pieces only as decorator items for the home,     HOWEVER,
my plans quickly changed.

The kidney stone kicked in taking me to my knees in pain.  Long story short, several days later...
I was relying on the old cane to get around and had been served several meals on the tray, in bed. (Not making Mr. Vintagesouthern a happy camper.)

Lesson learned. My next shopping adventure will be to look for:

swim suits, a jet ski,  snorkeling equipment and maybe even a motorcycle or para sail

Anything but walking canes and bed serving trays !!!
