Growing up and living in the south I have been exposed to many local traditions and superstitions.
I wouldn't trade it for the world. I think it just adds to the southern charm.
One of my favorite superstitions centers around the color "haint blue."
According to tradition the color haint blue has magical powers and if painted on the exterior of the
house it will keep ghosts and evil spirits from entering. To this day the color appears on ceilings, shutters,
porches and doors from Charleston, S.C. to Louisiana.
Thanks for dropping by for a visit and y'all come back!

A great post! I remember my grandparents talking about "haints." I had always wondered why most porch ceilings were painted blue, too!
ReplyDeleteAlways loved that color but never knew there was a reason for it. Thanks for sharing that. That porch is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday. I like those blues - my favorite is the blue ceiling. I have to repaint the house! So beautiful. sandie

Oh, that color of blue looks gorgeous on that porch! Happy Blue Monday!
ReplyDeleteI never heard of haint blue, but I've seen many porches with blue ceilings. I always thought it was because the sky is blue. Thanks for the blue information. I love to learn!

Perfect Blue Monday post! I have never heard of this Southern superstition. It is a lovely color. I have always admired a blue roof. They are always more costly than any other color. xo (P.S. it is so good to have you back blogging)
ReplyDeleteGreat blue. Good post!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice evening!
Whether it is hainted or not, it is a very pretty shade of blue.
ReplyDeleteHi! I didn't know that about that color. I do like it on shutters. Never have seen it on the ceilings before.
